New policy allows working title changes

A new campus policy on working titles designed to apply to long-serving administrators with outstanding performance became effective Jan. 13.

Campus policy 300-018 puts into place procedures for vice chancellors or associate vice chancellors to receive changes in their working titles in recognition of meritorious service over a period of years. Working titles differ from official titles and are intended to better describe day-to-day duties, according to Cindy Corwin, director, Department of Human Resources.

The title changes do not include additional wages and are temporary, meaning that once the current office holder leaves his or her job, the working title will be eliminated.

In announcing the new policy and its application to three UCCS administrators, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak emphasized that no new administrative positions were added, that no salaries were increased, that policy 300-018 received the endorsement of faculty and staff governance groups and academic deans, and that the title changes align UCCS positions with those at other CU campuses. Provost-select Mary Coussons-Read was also consulted.

Andrea Hutchins, associate professor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and Faculty Assembly president, said:

“The Faculty Assembly Executive Committee is pleased that this policy will allow these individuals to be recognized for all of the work they accomplish for UCCS and supports its implementation.”

Those receiving new working titles effective March 1 are:

David Moon, currently interim executive vice chancellor of academic affairs and provost, will become vice provost and associate vice chancellor. He will report to Provost Mary Coussons-Read. Moon previously held senior associate vice chancellor and associate vice chancellor positions dating to 2000.

Brian Burnett, currently vice chancellor for administration and finance, will become senior executive vice chancellor for administration and finance. He will report to Shockley-Zalabak. Burnett has held the vice chancellor position since July 2003.

Susan Szpyrka, currently senior associate vice chancellor, will become vice chancellor for administration and finance reporting to Burnett. Szpyrka was named associate vice chancellor in 2006.
