Forum to focus on budget, general education

Campus leaders will host an all-campus forum beginning at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 in the University Center theater to discuss the university’s budget as well as the implementation of a new general education curriculum.

All faculty and staff are invited to attend. Seating is limited to approximately 90. A video of portions of the forum will be made available at http://www.youtube.com/user/uccswebservices.

Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and Brian Burnett, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance, will lead the discussion of the CU and UCCS budgets for 2013-14 and CU’s legislative proposals for the Colorado General Assembly. The Colorado General Assembly begins Jan. 9, 2013 and will decide issues ranging from pay increases for classified staff members to the amount of state funding received by universities.

Following the budget discussion, David Moon, provost, will outline next steps in implementing a UCCS General Education Model. On Nov. 30, faculty members eligible to vote overwhelmingly supported to implement a plan that outlines an approximately 24 credit hour across-campus curriculum designed to support the campus student learning goals under the categories of “evaluate and create,” “know and explore” and “act and interact.”

Andrea Hutchins, president, Faculty Assembly, and associate professor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, announced that 84 percent of the faculty who cast online ballots on the curriculum model supported it. About 47 percent of the faculty who were eligible to vote participated.

Jeff Ferguson, professor, College of Business, and Christina Jimenez, associate professor, Department of History, co-chaired a faculty general education task force. The pair developed a video presentation to explain general education and its progress. Additional details are available at http://www.uccs.edu/provost/general-education.html.
