Open house will introduce campus to simulated patient family

UCCS faculty and staff will have the chance to meet an entire human patient simulator family, each of whom has a different health issue, during a 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 open house at the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Learning Center in University Hall.

The new, state-of-the-art, simulation center can mimic health issues ranging from heart attacks to child birth, according to Nancy Smith, dean, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The center gives students a taste of their profession before entering clinical rotations, increasing confidence and skill, and providing faculty a new tool in testing student competency.

“We’ve come a long way since Carl,” Smith said recently in reference to a single patient simulation device used by students and made famous by his guest appearance on CISCO TelePresence courses. “Carl’s whole family is here now, giving students a chance to practice health care within a much broader simulation spectrum.”

Gifts from the Colorado Health Foundation, the Caring for Colorado Foundation, and the UCCS campus helped support the construction of the center that began last December.

Refreshments will be served in University Hall Room 109 and free parking during the open house will be available in Lot N next to University Hall.
