The UCCS women’s soccer team stands fourth in the first NCAA South Central Regional Ranking of the season released today. The rankings are used to select teams for the NCAA postseason tournament.
It’s the highest ranking ever for the Mountain Lions, who are having their best season in program history with an 11-2-1 overall record and 7-2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UCCS is in a three-way tie for first in the RMAC standings with Metro State and Regis with four games remaining in the regular season. This is first time since 2010 that UCCS is ranked in the NCAA rankings and second time overall.
The RMAC teams in the rankings are Metro State at third, UCCS in fourth, Fort Lewis at fifth, Regis in seventh and Colorado Mesa rounding out the RMAC teams at eighth.
Six teams will advance to the regional tournament with the three conferences in the South Central Region receiving an automatic bid. The Heartland Conference has the top two spots with St. Edward’s and Dallas Baptist, followed by the five RMAC teams. The top team from the Lone Star Conference, Incarnate Word, is in ninth and would currently take the sixth seed in the tournament from Colorado Mines as the LSC representative.
The conference tournament champion is the automatic qualifier from each league. The Heartland Conference tournament will hold its championship game on Nov. 3 with the RMAC and Lone Star tournaments holding championship games on Nov. 4. The selection show for the NCAA postseason will be held Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m. MDT.
The Mountain Lions finish their regular season with four road games with the first coming Friday afternoon when they take on Colorado Christian at 3:30 p.m.
