New UCCS employees can learn about the history of the university, the names of its leaders, benefits such as health insurance or vacation leave, and even where they can get discounts as part of a revamped New Employee Orientation program.
Cindy Corwin, director, Office of Human Resources, recently announced the new, online-only employee orientation that is required for all new faculty and staff members and available to all other university employees. Temporary faculty and staff must also complete the orientation program.
“We used to do employee orientations in person,” Corwin said. “There are advantages to in-person communication but one of the big disadvantages was coordinating schedules. Sometimes, it took 90 days for us to have a group large enough to warrant a formal gathering. By that time, many employees had already missed opportunities or had been forced to figure things out on their own.”
Susan Watson, human resources specialist, Human Resources Department, led the development of the new orientation program. She built on the previous in-person efforts and added new information including encouragement of new faculty and staff to get involved in the campus by highlighting everything from staff and faculty governance committees to opportunities to work on various service projects. The 15 minute presentation in the university’s familiar Skillsoft training format includes videos and campus pictures.

To see the orientation, the following steps are required:
- Logon to MyUCCS Portal from http://www.uccs.edu/facstaff.html
- Click on the CU Resources tab
- Select TRAINING
- Select Start SkillSoft (SkillSoft will open in a separate window.)
- Select Catalog
- Click University of Colorado – Courses
- Select the Human Resources folder
- Select the CU: New Employee Orientation – UCCS course and click [Launch]
