Annual crime report shows increase in thefts, alcohol arrests

UCCS saw a slight increase of reported thefts on campus over the 2011-2012 academic year according to the 2012 Annual Security Report & Fire Safety Report.

“Theft has continued to be an issue on campus,” Jim Spice, director, Department of Public Safety said.

According to the report, 79 cases of theft were reported on campus in 2011, compared to 75 in 2010 and 51 in 2009.

“Most of these thefts have been crimes of opportunity,” Spice said. “Anytime you leave a valuable item unattended, whether it’s in your office or at a desk in the library, you’re risking it being stolen.”

According to Spice, most of these thefts are preventable by being more aware your surroundings and not leaving high value items like laptops and phones unattended.

Other items of interest include an increase in alcohol related arrests from 32 in 2010 to 42 in 2011.

While most alcohol related arrests usually occur within student housing,  Spice attributed the increased number to 14 arrests made concerning individuals drinking in on campus parking lots.

The university also saw a decrease in drug related arrests on campus, dropping from 50 in 2010 to 20 in 2011.

According to the Fire Safety Report, there were no on campus fires reported.

The report is issued annually and made available to students and university employees in compliance to the Clery Act and the U.S. Department of Education regulations.

The Annual Security Report contains a summary of campus crime statistics, campus safety and crime prevention programs, and safety information. The fire safety section has information about university housing fire notifications, drills and evacuation procedures, fire statistics, alarm systems and fire education and training.
