Garden master presents free summer gardening workshops

Three gardening workshops for the UCCS community are scheduled for July and August at the UCCS Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability Garden.

The workshops will take place from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. July 14, Aug. 4 and Aug. 18. All workshops will take place at the SEAS Garden, located at the Heller Center for Arts and Humanities.

The topics for the workshops are:

  • July 14, Building an Herb Spiral
  • August 4, Pruning Lilacs
  • August 18, Seed Collecting

Judith Rice-Jones, retired faculty, Kraemer Family Library, and garden master, SEAS Garden, believes that the workshops are an opportunity to observe nature and to learn from it.

“First we’ll discuss the concepts, and then we’ll try and implement them in the garden,” Rice-Jones said. “That way participants have the theoretical knowledge and the hands on experience.”

The first workshop focuses on herb spirals, which are very practical for the Colorado weather and environment and are great for people who enjoy cooking.

The workshops are free and open to the public and no previous experience is required. Cash donations to the SEAS Student Garden and the Heller Center are welcome.

“Whether they’re interested in a backyard garden or in protecting bio-diversity, the topics should be relevant to both,” Rice-Jones said.

Participants are asked to bring closed-toe shoes, garden gloves, a sun hat and a water bottle.
