Disability services recruits new position

The Office of Disability Services and University Testing expects to hire the campus’s first sign language interpreter coordinator before the end of May.

Emails sent the week of April 21 invited UCCS community members to interview forums. Rachel Gibson, program coordinator, said the office is excited to be growing.

Ida Dilwood, director, explained why a new hire is necessary.

“Over the last few years,” she said, “UCCS has had a steady enrollment of deaf or hard of hearing students. We have also had the privilege of hiring more full-time staff and faculty who are deaf or hard of hearing. The American Sign Language classes have expanded into a minor degree option.

“With this growth came necessary changes. After careful study and input, UCCS decided to create a new interpreter coordinator position in the Disability Services Office. This position will coordinate all interpreter requests along with interpreting for classes and meetings on campus. Disability Services believes this position is the next step in providing the best services to those who request sign language interpreting at UCCS. “

Disability is defined by law as a physical or mental condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The mission of the Office of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities the accommodations and support necessary for them to take full advantage of UCCS academic opportunities. Services are also available to faculty and staff.
