CU Board of Regents sets 2012-13 tuition rates

DENVER – The University of Colorado Board of Regents today approved increased tuition rates for UCCS and other CU campuses and gave permission to UCCS to begin expansion plans for the Campus Recreation Center.

CU campus administrators presented two options for tuition, both reflecting increases over last year, given continued reductions in state funding for higher education. CU absorbed a disproportionate share of those state budget cuts.

The regents voted unanimously in favor of an option entailing lower tuition rate increases at the university’s four campuses. Rates vary by program; those listed reflect typical arts and sciences disciplines.

For UCCS, tuition will increase 4.9 percent for Colorado resident undergraduate freshman and sophomore-level students, a base rate increase of $11 per credit hour. Increases for Colorado resident junior- and senior-level students will increase between 5 percent and 5.1 percent depending on the program. Tuition for Colorado resident graduate students will increase between 5.9 percent and 6.1 percent.

Non-Colorado resident undergraduate students will see an increase of approximately $16 per credit hour or 3 percent.

For a freshman UCCS student who is a Colorado resident and enrolled in 15 credit hours per semester, tuition will be $7,050, up from $6,720.

The regents also gave UCCS leaders the go-ahead to begin planning for an $18 million expansion of the Campus Recreation Center. UCCS students recently voted to increase student fees to pay for the expansion. The fee increase will not begin until fall 2014.

Tuition increases at the other CU campus were:

CU- Boulder: Tuition will rise 5 percent. Full-time undergraduate students will be charged for 12 credit hours, up from 11.25 credit hours in fiscal year 2011-12. For full-time resident undergraduates, tuition will be $8,056, up from $7,672.

CU-Denver:  Base tuition will rise by 0.8 percent. Full-time resident undergraduate students will be charged for 15 credit hours, up from 13 credit hours in fiscal year 2011-12.

Anschutz Medical Campus: Credit hour cost for nursing undergraduate students will rise by 2.4 percent; the dollar amount varies widely based on student debt and peer averages comparisons.
