Faculty members concerned about high textbook prices need not feel helpless, according to Jason Votruba, manager, UCCS Bookstore.
While some faculty may think they are doing students a favor by referring them to online book retail sites, Votruba explained that the campus bookstore can meet or beat those prices if faculty members will complete textbook orders early. For summer and fall semesters, faculty members are requested to turn in book orders by April 15.
By ordering early, there are more books available from publishers, Votruba explained. More stock means lower prices. Ordering early also allows shipments to be combined. Additionally, knowing which books will be used in the summer and fall semesters also allows the campus bookstore to buy back more books from current students at the end of the spring semester. Keeping the books on campus also lowers costs.
“One truck full of books is obviously more efficient that 10 deliveries with a few books each,” Votruba said. “We will pass along reduced shipping costs directly to the student. This is an easy way that faculty members can reduce the financial burden students face.”
