Planning Your Legacy is topic for retired faculty and staff lunch

The UCCS Retired Faculty and Staff Association luncheon, scheduled for 11: 30 a.m. March 19 in the Lodge, will feature two speakers talking about the most unpleasant topic of all, death and one’s legacy.

Cynthia Griffin, community educator for Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, and Susan Davis, senior trust adviser, Wells Fargo Private Bank will talk about how to lessen the burden one leaves to family.

Preparing for the inevitable is key, according to Griffin and Davis. Both women are involved with Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care and will address issues that are generally considered unpleasant even though they require attention.

Because they prefer not to think about death, most people do not think about planning and preparing for it, leaving grieving, distracted loved ones to face legal details and social responsibilities. If the situation involves a terminal illness or a life-limiting condition, the family left behind must contend with more painful realities.

Griffin and Davis will talk about how planning can make the inevitable a bit less painful.

Griffin is not only a community educator, but is Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care’s liaison to area physicians and hospitals. Her expertise involves the specialized aspects of hospice care and palliative medicine, a field focused on relieving pain and providing comfort. Her job includes sharing this information and providing practical support for terminal patients and their loved ones.

Davis originally studied nursing before turning to a banking career where she retained a nurturing instinct. She says families, senior issues and life management are considerations for management of finances. Employed at Wells Fargo for almost 15 years, she serves on the board of directors for Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.

The Retired Faculty and Staff Association is an organization of past UCCS employees who continue to serve the campus, socializing with former colleagues while collectively improving retiree benefits and interacting with other retiree organizations.
