Palisades at Broadmoor Park, an innovative Colorado Springs senior community partnered with UCCS, earned gold and silver National Home Builder’s Association Awards during the NHBA annual convention Feb. 9 in Orlando.
Palisades earned a gold award for its integration of technology into the senior living community and a silver award for its fitness and wellness program. Award recipients were selected by a jury of sixteen industry experts who specialize in the 50-plus housing industry. There were more than 175 nominations for the awards from around the world.
“These awards recognize the power of collaborative partnerships and innovation,” Toby Gannett, executive director, Palisades, said. “Since 2004, UCCS and Palisades have worked to make the best senior housing in the country. Together, we’ve earned more than two dozen awards. More importantly, we’ve improved the lives of our residents.”
The nomination of Palisades for the NHBA Award was supported by the Colorado Springs Housing and Building Association and its board president, John Cassiani.
Faculty and students from the UCCS College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences have worked for more than eight years to develop an integrated model of fitness and wellness promotion at Palisades. UCCS efforts with Palisades are led by Sara Qualls, Kraemer Family Professor of Aging, Psychology Department, and director of the Gerontology Center, Mary Ann Kluge, associate professor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and Amy Silva-Smith, associate professor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences. This unique collaboration was recently described in The Gerontologist published by Oxford University Press.
The partnership is conducting leading-edge research in helping Americans live their lives to the fullest.
“We baby boomers are going to benefit from the work that is taking place now with our parents as they age,” Qualls said. “This leading edge research that is taking place is going to affect lives now and well into the future.”
