CU regents back lower tuition for undocumented students

The University of Colorado Board of Regents voted Wednesday to support a bill that would give unsubsidized in-state tuition to undocumented students who attended high school in Colorado.

The regents voted to support state Senate Bill 15 sponsored by state Sens. Michael Johnston, D-Denver, and Angela Giron, D-Pueblo. The bill includes a new provision allowing individual colleges and universities to opt out of offering the lower tuition rate for undocumented students.

The bill essentially would create a third tier of tuition, a rate that is higher than that charged to Colorado residents but dramatically lower than non-resident tuition. Currently, undocumented students are billed at the non-resident rate.  For students to be eligible to earn the lower rate, they would need to have attended three or more years of high school in Colorado and then be accepted by a college within a year after graduating or earning a GED.
