Manuel Avalos, director of research partnerships and innovation, University of North Carolina, Wilmington, will present his qualifications to be dean of the UCCS College of Letters, Arts and Sciences during a campus forum scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Feb. 9 in the University Center Theater.
Avalos, director of research partnerships and innovation since 2011, previously served as associate vice chancellor for faculty support and development at UNC Wilmington, associate vice provost for research and faculty development at Arizona State University, West Campus, associate director of ASU’s Hispanic Research Center and as social sciences program co-coordinator in ASU’s Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of New Mexico.
Avalos is the fourth of six dean candidates to visit UCCS.
Elizabeth Throop, interim dean, Siebens School of Business and visiting professor of anthropology, Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa, was introduced as a finalist and conducted a public forum Jan. 31. Kathleen Tiemann, interim dean, College of Arts and Sciences, University of North Dakota, was introduced as a finalist and conducted a public forum Jan. 23. Rex Welson, associate dean, College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, was introduced as a finalist and conducted a public forum Jan. 18.
The finalists were announced Jan. 11 by Teri Switzer, dean, Kraemer Family Library, and search committee chair.
The other candidates are:
- Peter Braza, professor of mathematics, College of Computing, Engineering and Construction, University of North Florida.
- Tammy Stone, professor of anthropology, University of Colorado Denver.
The dates of public presentations by candidates will be announced in Communique and by email to faculty and staff lists.
