UCCS on the map

Google recently added 360 degree Street View photos of the UCCS campus to Google Maps. Unlike a traditional map that folds or even new-age online maps, Street View is a feature of Google Maps that provides panoramic street-level photos of buildings, streets and landmarks.

It’s almost like being there.

The photos went online in December,  in time for the spring semester and for prospective students to take a virtual tour of campus.

Jeff Foster, multimedia marketing coordinator, University Advancement, worked with Google representatives to coordinate the capturing of Street View images of UCCS. Facilities Services staff worked to be sure the campus looked good in its photo debut.

“Being able to see UCCS on Street View using a computer or phone is going to be a great way for people to remotely explore our campus,” Foster said. “And to see how beautiful it is.”

Google staff members, using a special array of cameras mounted on a large tricycle, toured the campus in May 2010 and again in May 2011. Once the photos were processed and satellite images were updated, Google published the results, putting UCCS in a selective group of colleges in the Street View Partner Program including Stanford University, Waseda University in Tokyo and University of Glasgow in Scotland.
