Dean finalists announced for College of Letters, Arts and Sciences

Kathleen Tiemann, interim dean, College of Arts and Sciences, University of North Dakota, will present her qualifications to be dean of the UCCS College of Letters, Arts and Sciences during a campus forum scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Jan. 23 in the University Center Theater. A reception is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Jan. 23 in University Center 116.

Tiemann, interim dean at UND since Jan. 2011, previously served as associate dean, co-chair of the university’s Communication Department, chair of the Sociology Department, co-chair of the Anthropology Department, director of the Women’s Studies Program and co-director of the Sociology Department graduate program. She joined the UND faculty in 1988 as an assistant professor of sociology and was later promoted to professor. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley (Mich.) State University and master’s and Ph.D. from Western Michigan University.

Tiemann is the second of five dean candidate finalists to visit UCCS. Rex Welson, associate dean, College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, was introduced as a finalist and conducted a public forum Jan. 18. The finalists were announced Jan. 11 by Teri Switzer, dean, Kraemer Family Library, and search committee chair.

The other candidates are:

  • Manuel Avalos, director of research partnerships and innovation, University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
  • Peter Braza, professor of mathematics, College of Computing, Engineering and Construction, University of North Florida.
  • Tammy Stone, professor of anthropology, University of Colorado Denver.
  •  Elizabeth Throop, visiting associate professor of anthropology and interim dean, Siebens School of Business, Buena Vista University.

The dates of public presentations by candidates will be announced in Communique and by email to faculty and staff lists.
