Are cell phones harmful?
That’s the question Jerry Phillips, director, UCCS Science Learning Center, will discuss at the November Café Scientifique scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Clyde’s in the University Center.
Phillips is the resident expert on levels of radiation and the effects it can have on the human body. Phillips began his studies in 1982 when investigating household electrical currents and has testified before Congress and other regulatory bureaus. At Café Scientifique, he will discuss his own research and other findings on the contentious and internationally relevant topic of cell phone safety. While he says that there is a link between cell phone usage and the occurence of brain and ear cancer, he also recommends that people take a critical approach when forming their opinions and consider all research presented.
Café Scientifique is an informal gathering of scholars and science aficionados who are passionate about debate and friendly discussion with their peers. Phillips said he will follow the tradition of previous gatherings and not use Power Point, though some sort of visual aides may be utilized.
