Classified staff bonuses coming

Portrait of Chancellor Pam Shockley-ZalabakClassified staff will see bonuses in their pay this month and Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak is pleased to show her appreciation to all parties who made it possible.

After an Oct. 21 email from CU President Bruce Benson informed the CU community about a one-time pay increase for classified staff, Shockley-Zalabak thanked faculty and PESA governance groups in a message of her own, citing "continuing contributions from staff and faculty" and her satisfaction in providing some financial reward as a measure of appreciation.

At its April 27 meeting, the CU Board of Regents approved a 3 percent merit pool for faculty and exempt staff, contingent on meeting budget goals. This resulted in subsequent pay increases for faculty and exempt staff. The regents have no authority, however, to adjust classified staff salaries, which are set by the state.

The regents also expressed a desire for CU administrators to explore how the university might also reward its classified employees, Benson said.

"They have maintained a high level of performance and worked tirelessly to meet the various demands resulting from the higher enrollment, particularly with a new student information system, and from taking on tasks of those positions we cannot fill at this time due to budget constraints," he said. In recognition of those achievements, he announced a one-time 3 percent non-base building performance/incentive award for classified employees who achieved a performance rating of two or three during the last performance management cycle that ended March 31. He said the award will be reflected in the Oct. 31 pay, and thanked the CU community for continued commitment and hard work.

In her message Shockley-Zalabak said "We have informed the classified staff earlier today that those with a minimum of seven months of service to the campus will receive a one-time, 3 percent non-base building award in their October pay advices.

"This development comes after strong support of all staff and faculty, from President Benson, my leadership team, as well as support from governance groups, such as the PESA Board and the Faculty Assembly Executive Committee, for equitable treatment of all staff in the salary adjustment process.

"I appreciate all of the continuing contributions from staff and faculty and am pleased that we are able to provide financial awards as one measure of our appreciation."
