PESA president urges involvement

Stephanie Hanenberg, director, Student Health Center, and president, Professional Exempt Staff Association, welcomed old and new members to a PESA luncheon Thursday and encouraged getting involved in upcoming events at UCCS.

Noting the number of newcomers among the PESA ranks attending, Hanenberg requested members to stand and identify themselves, and for executive board members to identify their positions. She then spoke briefly to the group.

"I want to encourage members to think about serving," she said.

She mentioned various committees in need of volunteers and urged members to consider roles on next year's executive board.

In addition, Hanenberg stressed the importance of keeping informed regarding staff employment issues. She encouraged members to attend the combined Staff Council/PESA luncheon Oct. 11 for a question-and-answer session with Todd Saliman, senior policy advisor for government relations, CU System. She asked members to attend the Nov. 4 PESA luncheon with pertinent questions for a question-and-answer meeting with Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak.

Hanenberg called the group's attention to information being updated on the PESA website, including new bylaws. She said the PESA executive board recently met with the chancellor and PESA members will be receiving emails regarding the revised bylaws. She encouraged members to vote on the bylaws when they arrive sometime in the next few weeks. Hanenberg also urged members not on the PESA email distribution list to identify themselves so their names can be listed.

She presented a general campus news update, including enrollment figures and that meeting projected numbers should mean some long-delayed raises for faculty and professional exempt staff. She also mentioned that renovations to student housing and the Heller property guest house are scheduled as upcoming construction projects.

Finally, Hanenberg announced that volunteers are needed to assist with health screenings scheduled on campus in conjunction with the Be Colorado program, and the UCCS Athletics basketball boosters club she co-chairs is seeking new members. She said she could be contacted for more information.

A luncheon presentation followed, with Tamara Moore, director, Auxiliary Services Marketing, sharing "True Colors," a communication theory based on color groupings to identify and understand different communication styles. Via cards describing values and personality traits, Moore directed everyone to determine whether they were in gold, green, blue or orange categories. In a following exercise, she called for those in each color group to discuss and list their attributes then share findings with the other groups.

The values, communication styles and concerns of each group differed enough for participants to recognize the potential for conflict between colors. Moore's guidance stressed the value of different perspectives in cooperative situations.

For more information about the True Colors concept, the presentation made to UCCS Staff Council last year may be found at https://communique.uccs.edu/?p=2359.
