In Memory: Seyhan Dwelis

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 26 at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock, for Seyhan Dwelis, 66, a senior instructor in the Department of Anthropology.

Dwelis died Aug. 18 at Pikes Peak Hospice after fighting cancer throughout the summer, according to Minette Church, associate professor and chair, Department of Anthropology.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at UCCS, and then joined the department in 1998 as a laboratory assistant.  After earning her master’s at Colorado State University, she worked as a lecturer at UCCS until being named an instructor in 2004. She was named senior instructor in Aug. 2010.

In addition to teaching ANTH 1030: Introduction to Human Origins, she used her anthropology and archaeology background in service to the community including the City of Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy. She also directed and was instrumental in establishing the Anthropology Department’s state-of- the- art curation facility for archaeological collections.

In recognition of her contributions, the department plans to name the artifact curation facility in her honor.
