An opening convocation ceremony featuring Tom Huber, professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, kicks off the UCCS 2011-12 academic year at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 17.
Huber, a president’s teaching scholar, will address a crowd of mainly freshman students in the Gallogly Events Center. He will speak about the power of individual action and how the results from this can have impacts beyond the original act.
Huber’s presentation, “You Can’t Do Just One Thing,” explores how all things on the planet are interrelated and that repercussions of a single act may influence other events. The contemporary topic of sustainability ties into this year’s All Campus Read selection, “No Impact Man,” by Colin Beavan.
Huber’s most recent work is a series of books on different aspects of the physical landscapes of Colorado and the west. In addition to being a 1993-1995 president’s teaching scholar, Huber is the 1985 recipient of the UCCS Outstanding Teaching Award, and a Fulbright Scholar to Ireland in 1995. He also served as this year’s chair of the campus sustainability committee, which is composed of faculty, staff and students.
Convocation is open to all UCCS faculty, staff and students. A free barbecue on the University Center plaza will follow at approximately 5:30 p.m.
