Update: UCCS junior forward Brittany Hernandez scored 15 points in the second half to lead both teams in scoring, but the Mountain Lions lost 70-43 loss to West Texas A&M in the First Round of the 2016 NCAA Division II National Tournament March 10.
The UCCS women’s basketball team qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight season and will be the sixth seed in the South Central Region, announced March 6 by the Division II Women’s Basketball Committee.
The Mountain Lions will face the region’s three seed West Texas A&M on at 11 a.m. March 10 in Lubbock, Texas.
UCCS was the last team announced from the region as an at-large selection by the NCAA. The Mountain Lions are one of four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, along with Colorado State University (2), Pueblo, Colorado School of Mines (5) and Black Hills State (7). Lubbock Christian earned the top seed, Angelo State earned the fourth seed and Texas Woman’s rounded out the regional field as the eight seed.
The Mountain Lions earned the bid with a 21-9 overall record. UCCS tied for fourth in the RMAC regular season and advanced to the conference semifinal for the second straight season. Brittany Hernandez became the third student-athlete in RMAC history to sweep the overall and defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season and is leading the region with 21 points per game.
