A sweep of the two fall Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference events gave the UCCS men’s golf team its 12th conference championship in the RMAC South Event Oct. 13 at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club in Sandia Park, New Mexico.

The Mountain Lions claimed the regular season title with a 10-stroke margin and Colin Prater claimed his second individual title of the season with a 1-under-par 71.

The regular season championship was re-established this season with a new scoring system for the two RMAC events. The championship is the first for men’s golf since the 2013 tournament championship and the first regular season championship since 2010. It’s the 17th RMAC championship for UCCS in any sport.

Prater used birdies on holes 14 and 17 to close the gap with Colorado Christian’s Nathaniel Goddard. Prater was 2-over-par on holes 14-18 in the first round and even on that same stretch in the second round before the 2-under performance in the final round. Prater’s birdie on hole 17 was the tiebreaker for the individual title as he swept the two fall conference events this fall.

Zach Tripp finished in a tie for No. 9 overall with 228 after a 6-over-par 78. It was his second top-10 finish of the season. Zach Berhost was one stroke behind Tripp in the tournament standings with 229 and was No. 11 in the standings. He had the second-best performance of the third round for UCCS with a 77. Kyle Southard wrapped up the Mountain Lion team score with a 78 and finished No. 13 with a tournament score of 231.

UCCS finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place Colorado Christian and had the best third round score of the 15 teams in the tournament. It was the largest margin of victory for the Mountain Lions since a 17-stroke win at the 2013 RMAC Championships.

UCCS will finish the 2015 fall season next week at the California State-Monterey Bay Otter Invitational.
