The Galleries of Contemporary Art will feature New-Mexico based artist Jane Lackey in a new exhibit that opens Sept. 11 at GOCA 121, 121 S. Tejon in downtown Colorado Springs.
“Points of Contact” will open at 5 p.m. Sept. 11 with an artist’s talk. A reception will follow until 9 p.m. Lackey will be in residence at the downtown gallery for eight days during which time she will create a site-specific and participatory installation in coordination with UCCS students. The exhibit will be open to the public through Oct. 24.
Lackey’s art crosses disciplines, intersecting drawing, fibers, graphics, sculpture and participation manifesting in immersive experiences. Her conceptual works on paper and cloth trace ideas such as social systems of communication, mapping place, language and identity. Her GOCA installation will feature atmospheric, semi-transparent pockets of space that emerge from the process and materiality of her works on paper and invite participation through open-ended questions, writing, mark-making and reflection.
“Our inner systems are magnified and reflected in the exterior built world and within inner-connections between people and actions,” Lackey said. “Whether we engage socially in situ or link up through virtual communication, discussions, conversations and actions move between us invisibly forming glue — a short-lived genetic bond prompted by a synaptic charge. To lock and unlock these bonds in mapped visual relationships, I use tape, stickers, dots, labels and stitches of thread that are easily adhered to or released from larger fields of paper as they mark direction and place.”
Lackey’s artwork was recently exhibited at the Loranger Art and Architecture Center, Detroit; The Wellcome Trust, London; I Space, Chicago, Ashville Art Museum, North Carolina, Beach Museum, Manhattan, Kansas, Exit Art and Tang Museum, New York.
She received grants from Artist Trust, Seattle, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council and residency/fellowships from the LaNapoule Foundation and Camargo Foundation in France. She recently received the 2011 Creative Artist Exchange Fellowship sponsored by the Japan-US Friendship Commission and National Endowment for the Arts. Her work is included in many private, public and museum collections. Lackey has a venerable career as an educator paralleling her work as a practicing artist, serving as professor and fiber department chair at the Kansas City Art Institute (1980–1997) and as head of fibers at Cranbrook Academy of Art (1997-2007).She currently works and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
