Mount Trashmore aims to reduce campus waste

UPDATE:  Mount Trashmore has been rescheduled to 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Nov. 20 due to inclement weather.

B1oi-vFCYAARmyLEl Pomar Plaza will be covered in trash between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Nov. 13 as UCCS students and members of the Office of Sustainability sift through a day’s worth of waste to determine which items should have been recycled or composted.

The annual Mount Trashmore event aims to raise awareness for campus sustainability efforts.

According to the Office of Sustainability, on average, UCCS can recycle more than 50 percent of its trash on a daily basis. Items not being recycled include plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, and all forms of paper.

“The goal of Mt. Trashmore is to engage the UCCS campus community in acknowledging what everyday items can be diverted from the landfill,” Kimberly Reeves, sustainability program manager, Office of Sustainability, said. “The visualization of a day’s worth of UCCS trash piled in one location will get people talking. Whether they’re just mentioning to a friend that they saw a huge pile of trash in front of the library or if they put on a Tyvek suit and help sort, this event is intended to dramatically present the amount of waste we produce as a community.”
