The Public Safety Initiative, part of the College of Public Service, will be featuring a lineup of speakers including Peter Langman and George Brauchler at the 2024 McConkie Leadership Conference, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at Boot Barn Hall.
Peter Langman, Ph.D., is a sought-after expert on the psychology of school shooters and other perpetrators of mass violence. He conducts trainings on understanding the psychology of school shooters and identifying potential school shooters for professionals in mental health, education and law enforcement.
George Brauchler served as the elected District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District, Colorado’s most populous district (includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties), from 2013-2021. As district attorney, Brauchler prosecuted some of the most high-profile cases in recent Colorado history, including the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, the 2013 Aurora theater shooting and the 2020 school shooting at STEM Academy in Highlands Ranch.
“At this time and on the anniversary of the Columbine tragedy,” said George Reed, Dean of the College of Public Service, “it is particularly important for leaders to intentionally and proactively discuss how to keep our communities safe.”
This year’s conference will focus on Leading Through the Community Impact of a School Shooting – 25 Years Post Columbine. Attendees will hear from an expert in the psychology of mass shooters, school safety and security experts who will discuss the Uvalde school shooting, and provide an overview of lessons learned, research, and best practices in prevention, and a former district attorney who prosecuted three of the most high-profile cases in recent Colorado history.
