Petra Jans spent the past year studying new cures for African sleeping sickness, a deadly disease caused by a parasite transmitted by the bite of the tsetse fly.
Carter Adams, Michael Morris, Spencer Rutter and Quinn Van Drew are helping Colorado Springs determine which wildfire detection systems will operate effectively in the region.
Jans, a Colorado College student, and Adams, Morris, Rutter and Van Drew, United States Air Force Academy cadets, will join with UCCS students as part of the annual Colorado Springs Undergraduate Research Forum, a one-day event highlighting research from arts, humanities and sciences from students at CC, USAFA, and UCCS.
Slated for April 12, CSURF is a collaboration of the three universities. More than 115 posters and oral presentations cover the latest research into the effects of writing, music and art on human performance and capabilities, as well as chemistry, biology, aerospace and astronautics research on a wide range of subjects.
The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with a keynote speech by retired Gen. Ervin Rokke, senior scholar in residence at the Air Force Academy’s Center for Character and Leadership Development. He served in the military for 35 years, in operational, diplomatic and leadership positions. At CSURF, Rokke will speak about transforming linear institutions to operate in a nonlinear, highly technical world.
Presentations will continue throughout the day, with three sessions for oral presentations and two poster sessions. The schools also provide breakfast and lunch for registered participants
CSURF is free and open to the public. Hosted this year at the Air Force Academy, participants must register at www.uccs.edu/~csurf and sign in at Clune Arena. Buses will deliver participants to the Falcon Center in Fairchild Hall inside the cadet area at the Academy.
