On most college campuses, Sunday mornings during Homecoming week are reserved for sleeping. At UCCS, faculty, staff, students and alumni will kick off Homecoming week by helping clean Garden of the Gods Park after recent rains caused flooding and damage.
UCCS community members will work with the Rocky Mountain Field Institute to repair social trails and erosion gullies damaged in the recent storms from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29.
Participants will meet at the UCCS Upper Lodge at 10 a.m. for a free breakfast before heading to the park.
According to Amanda Koback, program manager, Office of the Dean of Students, and project coordinator, this is a chance for the UCCS faculty, staff, students and alumni to connect and help their community.
“UCCS gets a lot from the Colorado Springs community,” Koback said. “What better way to give back than to help clean up one of the city’s landmarks, especially with the substantial amount of rain we have received lately.”
Once at Garden of the Gods Park, volunteers will be split into teams to help with the restoration efforts.
The Rocky Mountain Field Institute will provide tools and work gloves, but asks participants to bring their own water and to wear closed-toe boots, weather-appropriate clothes and sunscreen.
“Come prepared to haul rock and dirt by bucket brigade, and spread seed and erosion control matting,” Liz Nichol, volunteer coordinator, Rocky Mountain Field Institute said in an email. “And be prepared to get dirty!”
According to Koback, families are welcome to participate, but volunteers must be 13 years of age or older.
