A discussion and reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public. Parking, compliments of UCCS Parking and Transportation Services, will be free in lots 1 and 3.<\/p>\n<p><b>About the Film<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide\u201d is a four-hour PBS television series and international broadcast. It was filmed in Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia, and the United States. Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn&#8217;s book that bears the same title, the documentary series introduces women and girls living in difficult circumstances and fighting to change them. Kristof, a Pulitzer Prize-winning <i>New York Times<\/i> reporter, and celebrity advocates America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde highlight viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offer an actionable blueprint for change.<\/p>\n<p>This documentary is part of a larger effort to spark recognition of oppression of women and girls worldwide. This movement brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to raise awareness of women&#8217;s issues and steps to fight oppression and to empower women. For more information, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halftheskymovement.org\/\">http:\/\/www.halftheskymovement.org\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This event is co-sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, Heller Center for Arts &amp; Humanities, the departments of history, sociology, women\u2019s and ethnic studies, and geography and environmental studies.<\/p>\n<p>Eva Warner, a student at CU-Boulder and daughter of Kee Warner, professor, Department of Sociology, will attend the screening and discuss her recent sociological\u00a0research on the social determinants of maternal health with pregnant women in urban slums in India. Perrin Cunningham, curator and director of external programs, Heller Center for Arts &amp; Humanities, will lead a discussion about steps to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><b>About Women\u2019s History Month<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s History Month began in 1982 as \u201cWomen\u2019s History Week.&#8221; Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as &#8220;Women\u2019s History Week.&#8221;\u00a0 In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women\u2019s History Project, Congress designated the month of March 1987 as \u201cWomen\u2019s History Month.&#8221; Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women\u2019s History Month.
