Concerns about Windows 8 and the ability of manufacturers to supply computers that work effectively with the new Microsoft operating system will delay the replacement of about 500 UCCS lab computers for as long as a year.<\/p>\n
Kirk Moore, director, Computing Services, recently announced the delay after evaluating the new operating system and consulting with hardware manufacturers. Windows 8 represents a departure from previous versions of Windows and utilizes touch-screen technology. Over the course of the next several months, Moore anticipates large personal computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP will introduce new machines that will take full advantage of the capabilities of Windows 8. Those new models will be evaluated for purchase to replace current lab computers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to provide the best possible computing experience for students,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n
Student laboratory computers are usually replaced every three years. As new computers are installed, older models are made available to campus departments. That practice will continue, Moore said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you were anticipating a newer computer in January as part of the refresh process and are having computer problems, please contact the Help Desk,\u201d Moore said. \u201cWe will help you evaluate your options and minimize costs.\u201d<\/p>\n
