CU President Bruce Benson and UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak complimented Gov. John Hickenlooper\u2019s budget request and encouraged legislators to give consideration to his plan to boost funding for CU.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the governor recommended a $30 million increase in state funding to the higher education operating budget for Fiscal Year 2013-14. CU\u2019s share would be approximately $9 million if an allocation plan agreed to by all the higher education institutions is implemented.<\/p>\n
The request for almost $657 million for higher education \u00a0\u2014 $543 million in operating costs, with the remainder slated for financial aid \u2014 represents a 6.1 percent increase over last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appreciate the governor\u2019s clear commitment to ensuring that higher education continues its substantial contributions to the economy, health and culture of our state and beyond,\u201d Benson said. \u201cWe are also grateful for the leadership of Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia, who has been a champion of higher education in his role as executive director of the state Department of Higher Education.\u201d<\/p>\n
The recommended increase marks the first time since FY 2008-09 that higher education\u2019s budget would increase. For the first time in five years, pay increases for state classified employees are also proposed. A 1.5 percent pay increase is proposed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe past several years have been difficult times for higher education,\u201d Shockley-Zalabak said. \u201cWe still face challenges and there are many steps between the governor\u2019s proposal and enactment by the General Assembly but I am appreciative of the governor\u2019s support.\u201d<\/p>\n
