Fifteen dozen donuts and gallons of coffee served as the social mixer to introduce new and not-so-new UCCS police officers to the campus community Oct. 3 at the University Center.<\/p>\n

Jim Spice, director, Department of Public Safety, continued the tradition of \u201cCops, Coffee\u00a0and Krispy Kremes\u201d as a way of introducing police officers and dispatchers to the campus. For 11 years, the department has used the event to encourage interaction between the campus community and public safety staff, many of whom work nights or as dispatchers, known only by their voices on telephones and radios.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important event so faculty and staff can get to know us before there is a crisis,\u201d Spice said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot easier to put your hand out and say \u2018hello\u2019 when things aren\u2019t going crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Informal conversations ranged from recounting the summer\u2019s events and the Waldo Canyon fire to crime prevention tips and Officer Joe Dilwood\u2019s encouragement of support of Mountain Lion basketball teams this winter. Dilwood was a team member as a student.<\/p>\n
