{"id":8266,"date":"2012-09-28T13:56:22","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T19:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=8266"},"modified":"2012-09-28T13:56:22","modified_gmt":"2012-09-28T19:56:22","slug":"economic-experts-see-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=8266","title":{"rendered":"Economic experts see light at the end of the tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/image.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8309\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/image-e1348847968288-300x224.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/image-e1348847968288-300x224.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/image-e1348847968288-555x414.jpeg 555w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>While the U.S. economy has seen a large improvement in the last 12 months, El Paso County is trailing in growth, according\u00a0to the organizers of the 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0annual UCCS Southern Colorado Economic Forum.<\/p>\n<p>While El Paso is trailing, forum organizers Tom Zwirlein, professor, College of Business, and Fred Crowley, senior instructor, College of Business, predict a slow growth in the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to Crowley, housing and new car sales have increased in the last year within El Paso County.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you stopped counting now, sales would already by higher than the previous year,&#8221; Crowley said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these positive indications, employment is still down when compared to national numbers. Crowley attributes this to the loss of manufacturing jobs with Colorado Springs and El Paso County.<\/p>\n<p>Crowley and Zwirlein indicated that employment may see an increase with a number of new opportunities, including possible oil exploration and development, the rebuilding of the Mountain Shadows neighborhood and the lease of Memorial Hospital to the University of Colorado Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, Jim Paulsen, chief\u00a0investment strategist, Wells Capital Management and keynote speaker, believes the U.S. economy is on the right track to recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Growth in the economy is never fast enough to please everyone,&#8221; Paulsen said. &#8220;Especially during a political season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Accord to Paulsen, unemployment saw its largest drop in the last 12 months, leading to higher confidence and a better job market.
