{"id":8194,"date":"2012-09-25T11:33:57","date_gmt":"2012-09-25T17:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=8194"},"modified":"2012-09-28T09:35:26","modified_gmt":"2012-09-28T15:35:26","slug":"550000-grant-to-fund-military-student-scholarships-at-uccs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=8194","title":{"rendered":"$550,000 grant to fund military student scholarships at UCCS"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8199\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/military-student.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8199\" title=\"military student\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/military-student-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Military students interested in careers in science and technology will be eligible for a new scholarship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will offer about 30 scholarships annually for past and current military service members interested in pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Hines, assistant professor, Department of Biology, and Jugal Kalita, professor, College of Engineering and Applied Science, will lead efforts on a four-year $550,000 National Science Foundation grant designed to assist talented students who demonstrate financial need to study science and technology fields and eventually enter the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to help our service members acquire a professional career, rather than just a job,\u201d Hines said recently. \u201cMany military service members already have training and experience with advanced technologies, so careers in these fields would be an ideal fit. However, the transition back to the academic setting can be difficult for various reasons. The goal of this grant is to assist with a smoother transition for this well-deserving population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scholarships, up to $10,000 annually with the potential to renew, will be awarded based on financial need and a student\u2019s interest in pursuing an undergraduate STEM degree. These areas include biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography and environmental science, computer science, or computer, electrical, mechanical or aerospace engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Eligibility for the scholarships will include military veterans and members from all service branches, including reservists. Awards will supplement any education benefits provided by the military or Veterans Administration and are not limited to tuition and fees.
