{"id":7326,"date":"2012-07-09T11:35:49","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T17:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=7326"},"modified":"2012-07-09T11:35:49","modified_gmt":"2012-07-09T17:35:49","slug":"researchers-study-community-wildfire-resiliency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=7326","title":{"rendered":"Researchers study community wildfire resiliency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from UCCS will survey South Lake Tahoe residents about the 2007 Angora fire in an attempt to learn lessons about community responses to disaster.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7327\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Sutton.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7327\" title=\"Sutton\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Sutton-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeannette Sutton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jeannette Sutton, senior research associate, and Charles \u201cChip\u201d Benight, director, UCCS Trauma, Health and Hazards Center, are studying behavioral responses and access to critical information during catastrophic wildfires in rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to understand how access to information may decrease stress and increase the ability to cope effectively,\u201d Sutton said.<\/p>\n<p>Randomly selected participants will be asked to participate in a 20-minute phone survey about their fire experience and their perception of the response and recovery process.<\/p>\n<p>The study is funded by the National Science Foundation and is backed by strong support from the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce and the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scars left behind by a catastrophic fire are not only on the landscape but also on the communities affected,\u201d Norma Santiago, county supervisor, District 5, El Dorado County, Board of Supervisors, said. \u201cStrong community linkages combined with effective leadership from the public and private sectors help build the resiliency needed to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the study focuses on the South Lake Tahoe community, Sutton believes the findings will serve as a model for other fire-prone areas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7329\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7329\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benight.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7329\" title=\"Benight\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benight-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benight-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benight-555x370.jpg 555w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Benight.jpg 864w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charles &#8220;Chip&#8221; Benight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is extremely important as much of the U.S. is currently experiencing drought-like conditions and extreme heat,\u201d Sutton said.<\/p>\n<p>Sutton and Benight recently saw how extreme the situation could be after the Waldo Canyon fire erupted in Colorado Springs on June 23. The fire burned 18,247 acres and destroyed 346 houses, making it the most destructive fire in Colorado history.<\/p>\n<p>With the Waldo Canyon fire more than 90 percent contained, Sutton plans to submit a proposal to study its effect on the Colorado Springs community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to investigate the effect that access to critical information has on how people were able to make rapid decisions as the fire approached and their perceptions of how the community will remain resilient and recover,\u201d Sutton said.<\/p>\n<p>The Trauma Health and Hazards Center at UCCS is part of the National Institute of Science, Space and Security Centers.
