The iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign appeared in a slide show welcoming people instead to “Fabulous UCCS Spring Staff Luncheon 2012.”

The Vegas theme allowed Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak to joke about leadership team members appearing far too comfortable at the gambling tables. She also laughingly compared the lights of the Las Vegas Strip to North Nevada Avenue. On a more serious note, she thanked attending staff for hard work and dedication, attributing much of the campus’ success to staff’s sense of caring and sense of community.

A tradition at the spring staff luncheon is recognition of longtime service. Awards for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service went to 63 employees. Many of these individuals were featured in a slide show. See the list of service award winners elsewhere at http://communique.uccs.edu/?p=7098

The organizing committee opted for the games this year instead of skits or staged entertainment, resulting in an event some described as subdued compared to past luncheons. Staff executives were pleased with the turnout all the same.

All classified and professional exempt staff attending received black T-shirts with “UCCS Staff” inscribed on them. Since the gambling involved no money, luck at the gaming tables provided only the emotional satisfaction of winning. Staff with actual luck won the door prizes drawn several times throughout the luncheon. Prizes included gift cards for food and goods donated by local merchants. Brunch at the Broadmoor and a champagne brunch at Cheyenne Mountain Resort were given as grand prizes.

Staff enjoying Las Vegas games at the spring luncheon include, from left, Megan Broeren, program assistant, Student Success Center, Deirdre Green, program assistant, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Kevin Gilford, assistant director, Sustainability Office, Carla Rupprecht, general professional, College of Education.

More than 200 people attended the UCCS Spring Staff Luncheon May 23 to partake of food, fellowship and games.
