The show also won a 2016 Heartland Chapter Emmy Award in its first season.<\/p>\n<p>Students in the Communication Department\u2019s digital filmmaking track and the Visual and Performing Arts Department\u2019s music and theater programs produce the episodes. The show allows students to learn filmmaking and storytelling techniques and is set on campus and in other Colorado Springs locations. David Nelson, chair and professor of the communication department, served as executive producer.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"740\" height=\"417\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5pA1SYkp9aA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Investment\u201d won a silver People\u2019s Telly in the non-broadcast category. Mat Alvarado, a lecturer in the communication department and 2014 graduate, directed the short film about two students who clash over a botched investment opportunity. Nelson also served as producer and the cast featured alumni of the Communication Department and VAPA theater program.<\/p>\n<p>The Telly Awards were founded in 1979 to honor excellence in local, regional and cable television commercials, non-broadcast video and television programming.
