The building’s costs will be recouped by rent charged to students who live there.

“We are out of housing space,” Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said during an Aug. 30 all-campus forum. “We do not want to turn away highly qualified students who want to come to UCCS and live on campus.”

This fall, 90 students were left on a housing waiting list as classes began, Shockley-Zalabak said. That kind of demand helped fuel plans to add to the existing student housing base of approximately 600 students who live in the dormitory-style Summit Village and the 300 who live in the apartment-style Alpine village

If approved by the regents, construction could begin in the spring 2012, Gary Reynolds , executive director, Facilities Services, said. The new buildings would be added to the circa-1997 Summit Village which currently is home to about 600, mostly freshman, students. The new halls will be designed to meet the gold standard of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design criteria, Reynolds said. LEED buildings are more energy efficient and use sustainable materials and building practices.

— Photo by Jeff Foster, University Advancement

UCCS will seek approval from the members of the CU Board of Regents to add space for more than 200 more students to live on campus.
