Campus administrators believe U Car Share will serve the environment as well as students.

Through university partnership with the U-Haul Company, U Car Share makes a car available on campus for taking short-term trips, and it will be available to students, who are most often excluded by rental companies because of age. Jim Spice, executive director, Department of Public Safety, explained how the program works.

“Hourly car rental available directly on the main UCCS campus will be a great new service for its community members,” Spice said. “U Car Share would allow those without a car the flexibility to run an occasional mid-day errand or go to a doctor appointment, for example. If all goes to plan, this program also has the potential of helping UCCS meet its climate commitment goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We will launch the program with one U Car Share vehicle parked on the north side of the campus Housing Village (parking lot E). Additional vehicles may be added to the program if this vehicle is kept rented most of the time.”

“Our hope is that by implementing U Car Share, more and more people would be willing to arrive to the campus using alternative modes of transportation rather than driving single occupancy vehicles. Once the community understands what this program offers, our hope is they will feel more comfortable leaving their cars at home and taking a bus or riding a bike to campus.”

According to U-Haul representatives, one U Car Share vehicle can replace 15-20 personally owned vehicles and eliminate a student’s or faculty/staff member’s need to have their own transportation. One great advantage is the access offered to participants ages 18 years and up, providing the convenience to students otherwise excluded from renting due to their age.

U Car Share can provide the most technologically advanced vehicles and a support system that includes a nearby service center, roadside assistance, and other amenities. The parent company U-Haul boasts over 60 years of experience in the business of shared use products and reservation management, and advocates sustainable business practices. U Car Share uses social media, e-mail, text message alerts and e-newsletter to communicate, solicit opinions and gain information.

A relatively new program, U Car Share will offer services to many institutions, and its administrators hope to communicate and gain market knowledge from participants as the program addresses their needs.

Spice said the Public Safety office will closely follow the program’s progress to determine what changes or improvements should be applied to make and keep it effective. UCCS entered into an agreement with U-Haul July 15 and will begin promoting awareness of the U Car Share program to students this upcoming fall semester.

An hourly car rental program may reduce the number of vehicles rolling across UCCS.
