{"id":35630,"date":"2018-10-30T12:55:48","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T18:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=35630"},"modified":"2018-10-30T12:55:48","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T18:55:48","slug":"uccs-police-share-domestic-violence-resources-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=35630","title":{"rendered":"UCCS Police share domestic violence resources on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fb-video\" data-allowfullscreen=\"true\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UCCSPolice\/videos\/757497874597736\/\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\n<p>UCCS Police talk about warning signs of domestic violence and resources on campus for those who need help during a recent #SafetyTipTuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UCCSPolice\/videos\/757497874597736\/\">video<\/a> in honor of October being National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDomestic violence is behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other \u2013 that could be anything from physical battery, sexual assault, emotional and psychological abuse,\u201d said Lisa Dipzinski, sergeant, UCCS Police.<\/p>\n<p>Dipzinski explains warning signs of an unhealthy relationship in the video:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feeling unsafe with your partner<\/li>\n<li>Controlling behavior<\/li>\n<li>Unfound jealousy<\/li>\n<li>Volatile temper<\/li>\n<li>Constant criticism<\/li>\n<li>Giving orders<\/li>\n<li>One minute they\u2019re fine, the next they blow up<\/li>\n<li>Isolating you from family and friends<\/li>\n<li>Blaming others<\/li>\n<li>Physical act of pushing, shoving, kicking, hitting, slapping<\/li>\n<li>Financial dependency (<em>control over one account<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about them controlling every aspect of your life,\u201d Dipzinski said. \u201cIt will start out very subtle and get worse and worse and worse overtime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dipzinksi said that if you see this in a friend or family member, say something and try to get them help. They may not know that they have someone that can support them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn average, it usually takes seven times before someone will leave the abuser, it takes a long time to build confidence to get away, and they may have to move their money, home, kids and find a safe place to be,\u201d Dipzinski said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re helping that friend, just remember that it takes time for them to do it, so still be there friend and give them a source of support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Support across campus include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccs.edu\/recwellness\/\">Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccs.edu\/roc\/\">Respect on Campus<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Faculty<\/li>\n<li>Staff<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uccs.edu\/pusafety\/\">UCCS Police Department<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Friends or family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthesilencedv.org\/\">Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence<\/a> (BTSADV) is a non-profit that partners with Respect on Campus and provides a nationwide network on resources and support for survivors and families affected by domestic violence.
