The bronze will transported by truck to Colorado Springs in time for a 1 p.m. April 23 unveiling at Mountain Lion Field in the Four Diamonds Sports Complex on the west side of campus, according to Megan Fisher, director of development, CU Foundation.

Between the final 2011 home games of the Mountain Lion Softball Team, university leaders will unveil the sculpture and recognize its donor, Glenn Williams, Colorado Springs. The unveiling will occur following the first game and before the first pitch of a planned double-header against Adams State University.

The unveiling event is free. Tickets to the games are free for UCCS faculty, staff and students and children under 6. They are $6 for other adults and $3 for non-UCCS students and youth more than 7 years old.

Williams commissioned the sculpture and donated it to UCCS to highlight the role of women’s athletics in the collegiate experience. Williams is a retired Eastern Illinois University administrator who began attending UCCS softball games in 1993. He and his late wife, Joan, established the Glenn D.and Joan R. Williams Endowment for Women’s Athletics. The fund supports women student-athletics in softball, cross country, track and field, soccer, basketball, and volleyball as well as the softball coach position.

Williams will speak at the event. He will be joined by Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak, Scott Peterson, head coach, Softball, and Steve Kirkham, director, Athletics.

The event is organized by the CU Foundation. which facilitated Williams’ gift and the sculpture’s creation, along with the Department of Athletics.

Final touches were added this week to a 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture that will soon call UCCS home.

Protective coatings were applied to the bronze created by Denny Haskew, Loveland, of the National Sculptors’ Guild. (More)

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-3541","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-all
["GET
