UCCS eSports club will host the tournament and the UCCS Center for Critical Sport Studies will host the summit.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-35296\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event-300x388.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event-300x388.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event-768x993.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event-750x969.jpg 750w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event-116x150.jpg 116w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eSports-event.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201ceSports is quickly growing and becoming increasingly important across the world,\u201d said Jeffrey Montez de Oca, director, Center for Critical Sport Studies; and associate professor, Department of Sociology. \u201cChampionship tournaments have had more viewership than the Super Bowl \u2013 plus there\u2019s scholarships for players at some schools, clubs and teams across college campuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collegiate eSports teams will play in qualifying matches during the tournament, leading up to the championship. Teams will compete in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Counter-Strike: Global Offensive<\/li>\n<li>League of Legends<\/li>\n<li>Overwatch<\/li>\n<li>Smash 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The summit will feature two keynote speakers and a panel covering a variety of eSport topics.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Keynote speakers:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kurt Melcher<\/strong>, Intersport, will speak on the history of eSports, defining and recognizing it as an official sport, and the future of the sport. 11:10 a.m. \u2013 12 p.m. followed by Q&amp;A.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Holden<\/strong>, University of Oklahoma, will speak on the legal and ethical aspects in eSports and the future legal\/ethical implications of the sport. 1 \u2013 2 p.m. followed by Q&amp;A.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Ethics and Access Panel members: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andrea Braithwaite<\/strong>, University of Ontario, will focus on \u201cgeek\u201d masculinity within eSports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adrienne Massanari<\/strong>, University of Illinois, Chicago, will address Gamergate, gender and access within gaming, and \u201cgeek\u201d masculinity within eSports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matthew R Aguilar-Champeau<\/strong>, University of Minnesota, will speak to race, diversity, and masculinity in video game culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The panel happens from 3 \u2013 4 p.m. followed by a question and answer session and will be facilitated by Chris Bell, associate professor, Department of Communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have a great time and it should be a very interesting, fun and dynamic event between the tournament and summit,\u201d Montez de Oca said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdqoFXwNrafFQQ6x9vnvHLywumYY8Z9rATM4dOB1HT_MxYznA\/viewform\">Attendees can register here<\/a>.
