{"id":3450,"date":"2011-04-07T13:20:40","date_gmt":"2011-04-07T19:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=3450"},"modified":"2011-04-07T14:28:04","modified_gmt":"2011-04-07T20:28:04","slug":"buechner-to-alums-don%e2%80%99t-wing-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=3450","title":{"rendered":"Buechner to alums: Don\u2019t wing it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3451\" title=\"Alumni Lecture April 2011 015 v2\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Alumni-Lecture-April-2011-015-v2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"John Buechner talks with UCCS alumni\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Alumni-Lecture-April-2011-015-v2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Alumni-Lecture-April-2011-015-v2-555x416.jpg 555w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Alumni-Lecture-April-2011-015-v2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>CU President Emeritus John Buechner shared a personal eleventh commandment with UCCS alumni Saturday, a summary of lessons learned in a 34 year CU career and as an elected official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThou shalt not wing it,\u201d Buechner said to a crowd of 50 gathered at the Lodge for the Fourth Annual Alumni Lecture.<\/p>\n<p>In between recounting his first trip to the Cragmor Extension Campus in 1963, as UCCS was then known, Buechner shared insight into how to effectively network and to represent both yourself and your organization in social situations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are trying to influence people within your own organization or outside it \u2013 say the members of the Legislature \u2013 you cannot afford to wing it,\u201d Buechner said. \u201cYou must be conscious in how you present yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buechner shared tips that ranged from how to circulate in a room to dietary and beverage recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany times I stopped at McDonalds on the way home from a social event,\u201d Buechner said. \u201cIf you go to a function, you don\u2019t go to eat and certainly not to drink. You go to represent your organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Details of Buechner\u2019s 11<sup>th <\/sup>Commandment include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When circulating in a room, move counter-clockwise in small circles with the goal of meeting or conversing with each person twice.<\/li>\n<li>To aid in remembering names, visualize a stranger\u2019s name on his or her left shoulder and think of someone you already know who shares the same name.<\/li>\n<li>Be an attentive listener.<\/li>\n<li>Accept a business card if it is offered but don\u2019t initiate the exchange of cards.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t have a drink in your hand at an event. But I can assure you they work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Buechner served as CU\u2019s president from Nov. 1995 to May 2000. Prior to his appointment, he served as chancellor of the University of Colorado Denver campus and as a faculty member at CU Boulder.
