{"id":3446,"date":"2011-04-07T11:28:25","date_gmt":"2011-04-07T17:28:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=3446"},"modified":"2011-04-07T11:28:25","modified_gmt":"2011-04-07T17:28:25","slug":"uccs-to-host-colorado%e2%80%99s-28th-math-olympiad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=3446","title":{"rendered":"UCCS to host Colorado\u2019s 28th Math Olympiad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uccs.edu\/~olympiad\/gallery2\/gallery1.html#\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3447\" title=\"Math-Olympiad-ribbon\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Math-Olympiad-ribbon.jpg\" alt=\"Math Olympiad Bronze Medal\" width=\"290\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Math-Olympiad-ribbon.jpg 290w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Math-Olympiad-ribbon-e1302197245553-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a>The Colorado Math Olympiad will return to UCCS for its 28<sup>th<\/sup> year on April 22.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 400 middle and high school students from around the state will meet in Berger Hall and the Gallogly Events Center at 9 a.m. Participants are given four hours to complete the five essay-style problems.<\/p>\n<p>The CMO, chaired by Alex Soifer, professor, Interdepartmental Studies, is a chance for middle and high school students to test their talents and ingenuity while competing for medals, scholarships and other prizes.<\/p>\n<p>The CMO is the largest mathematical competition in the United States, with participants competing against one another, grades 6th through 12th. Annually, prizes are provided by the competition sponsors, such as Intermap Technologies, Wolfram Research and Texas Instruments, just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will offer the top winners \u2013 gold, silver and bronze medalists \u2013 a scholarship to UCCS. Other prizes include Casio calculators and math software.<\/p>\n<p>Student participation is free and open to all students grade 6-12. There is no limit on the number of schools or students who may participate.<\/p>\n<p>Winners will be announced at an April 29th awards ceremony in the Upper Lodge. At that time, Soifer will deliver a lecture entitled \u201cA Proof from The Book\u201d<em> <\/em>and present the awards.
