He doesn\u2019t want to leave his community and thought it would be great to support him and his school,\u201d Rios said.<\/p>\n<p>As president of the UCCS Hispanic Honor Society, Rios and other society members donated books and school supplies for Rios to deliver to Francisco\u2019s elementary class.<\/p>\n<p>Rios, joined by her\u00a011-year-old son, sister, niece and nephew, delayed their trip to the elementary school after realizing what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first walked outside there was muddy rain, and our clothes were covered in ash, mud and sand,\u201d Rios said. \u201cEveryone was confused and trying to figure out what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once they found out that burn victims were being brought to Escuintla for treatment and shelter, the group made their way south.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33411\" style=\"width: 253px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Volcan-de-fuego-Me-son-newphew-sister.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33411 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Volcan-de-fuego-Me-son-newphew-sister-253x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Volcan-de-fuego-Me-son-newphew-sister-253x450.jpg 253w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Volcan-de-fuego-Me-son-newphew-sister-84x150.jpg 84w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Volcan-de-fuego-Me-son-newphew-sister.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rios providing donations at one of the shelters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe town was chaos, police and vehicles bringing supplies were everywhere, people looked like they had just seen a ghost,\u201d Rios said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t just stand there, I wanted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After connecting with Edson Santizo, a student\u00a0at Escuintla Mariano Galvez Universty, the group learned the hospital had run out of a lot of materials like burn medications and Pedialyte for the dehydrated children. She faced many struggles throughout the trip between traveling, releasing donated funds, and witnessing so much loss, but is grateful for the experience and all the support received throughout the 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a life changing experience, and I would do it all over again,\u201d Rios said.<\/p>\n<p>Rios joined UCCS two and a half years ago as a first-generation, nontraditional student and is nearly complete with her studies.
