Steele, provost, Columbia University and author of \u201cWhistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do\u201d will give the keynote presentation\u00a0 \u201cElevating Learning through Inclusive Teaching\u201d to launch a day of engagement with approaches to engendering inclusive environments for learning across the campuses of the University of Colorado. The Diversity Summit will open at 9:30 a.m. in Berger Hall and continue until 3:00 pm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s system diversity summit is designed to involve participants in considering how Steele\u2019s research on stereotypes can inform our work to foster inclusive student success,\u201d Kee Warner, associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusiveness, said.<\/p>\n<p>Limited space remains for faculty or staff interested in attending. He is recognized as a leader in the field of social psychology and for his commitment to the systematic application of social science to problems of societal significance.<\/p>\n<p>Steele focuses on how the threat of falling into stereotypes based on social identity consistently inhibits people\u2019s performance on tasks ranging from test-taking to athletic ability.\u00a0 This is true for people from a broad range of social backgrounds, but has particular importance for women and people of color in higher education. Steele and his colleagues have also systematically evaluated a variety of ways that stereotype threat can be counteracted in the educational environment.<\/p>\n<p>He has published articles in numerous scholarly journals, including the <em>American Psychologist<\/em>, <em>The Journal of Applied Social Psychology<\/em>, the <em>Journal of Experimental Social Psychology<\/em>, the <em>Journal of Personality and Social Psychology<\/em>, and the <em>Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin<\/em>.
