{"id":24167,"date":"2016-09-16T10:57:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T16:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=24167"},"modified":"2016-09-16T10:57:08","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T16:57:08","slug":"uccs-to-provide-platform-for-engaged-discussion-on-islamophobia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=24167","title":{"rendered":"UCCS to provide platform for engaged discussion on Islamophobia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A three-day series \u201cThe United States and Islamophobia\u201d begins Sept. 19 at UCCS.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the Syrian refugee crisis and recent political rhetoric, the series will feature a Sept. 19 UCCS faculty panel discussion about refugees and the notion of a so-called Muslim threat. The series continues with a Sept. 20 discussion of Ayad Akhtar\u2019s Pulitzer-Prize winning 2012 play \u201cDisgraced\u201d and a Sept. 21 workshop aimed at leading students, faculty, staff and community members in recognizing and critiquing forms of Islamophobia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no better place than a university to provide a platform to engage in discussion and stimulate thought,\u201d said Carole Woodall, associate professor, History Department and Women\u2019s and Ethnic Studies Program, who coordinated the series.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24173\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/events.uccs.edu\/event\/the_us_and_islamophobia#.V9wRXRQvZ0d\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24173\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/US-and-Islamophobia-UCCS-291x450.png\" width=\"213\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/US-and-Islamophobia-UCCS-291x450.png 291w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/US-and-Islamophobia-UCCS-768x1187.png 768w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/US-and-Islamophobia-UCCS-728x1125.png 728w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/US-and-Islamophobia-UCCS-97x150.png 97w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/US-and-Islamophobia-UCCS.png 1650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">U.S. and Islamophobia Poster<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All events are free and will be 5-7 p.m. in the Kraemer Family Library\u2019s 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Floor Apse.<\/p>\n<p>The Sept. 19 panel will be led by three UCCS faculty members:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emily Skop, director, Global Intercultural Research Center. Skop will lead a discussion about refugees. Colorado Springs is home to at least three Syrian refugees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Jeffrey Scholes, director, Center of Religious Diversity and Public Life. Scholes will speak about Christianity and Islamophobia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Edin Mujkic, assistant professor, School of Public Affairs. He will discuss whether a Muslim threat is real or perceived. Mujkic\u2019s research focuses on national security, defense, homeland security and U.S. foreign policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Sept. 20 discussion will feature Woodall; Kevin Landis, associate professor, Visual and Performing Arts Department; and Max Shulman, assistant professor, Visual and Performing Arts Department. They will discuss Akhtar\u2019s \u201cDisgraced,\u201d which features a Pakistani-American character and themes of identity. The discussion is a part of Kraemer Family Library\u2019s Just Talk series.<\/p>\n<p>The Sept. 21 workshop will be led by Catherine Orsborn, director of Washington D.C.-based Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign, an interfaith organization working to end anti-Muslim sentiment.
