Participants are given four hours to complete five essay-style problems.

Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, check-in, and to serve as proctors from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to Valerie Quarles, administrative assistant, Interdepartmental Studies. Faculty, staff and students interested in assisting should contact Quarles, 255-3007 or vquarles@uccs.edu

Alexander Soifer

On April 29, Alexander Soifer, CMO chair and professor, Interdepartmental Studies, will review solutions to the problems and present awards. The award ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Berger Hall with a reception to follow.

The CMO is a chance for middle and high school students to test their talents and ingenuity while competing for medals, scholarships and other prizes.

The CMO is the largest essay-type mathematical competition in the United States with participants competing against one another, though no student who wishes to participate is excluded. Suggested participation levels are grades 6 through 12. Prizes and scholarships are provided by the competition sponsors, such as Wolfram Research, Springer Publishing and the UCCS Chancellor’s Office.

UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will offer gold, silver and bronze medalists a scholarship to UCCS. Other prizes include Casio calculators, math software, and books written by Alexander Soifer.

Student participation is free and open to all middle and high school students. There is no limit on the number of schools or students who may participate.

The Colorado Math Olympiad is supported by Wolfram Research, Mu Alpha Theta, Springer Publishing, the Office of the Chancellor, College of Letters, Arts, & Sciences, Parking and Transportation, School District 20 and School District 11, Greg Hoffman, and Alexander Soifer.

For more information about the Math Olympiad, and to view problems from previous years, visit http://www.uccs.edu/olympiad.

The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad will return for its 33rd year April 22. (More)

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1,12,14,22

post-22521","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-all","category-events","category-upcoming-events","category-video
https://communique.uccs.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Math-Olympiad-ribbon-e1302197245553-150x150.jpg
["GET
