For the course final, the troupe presented \u00a0plays adapted from children&#8217;s stories that deal with aging. The pieces were performed at the Colorado Springs Senior Center, a local elementary school, the Manitou Art Center and the &#8220;e11&#8243; Playschool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I ask my students to role-play old folks, they typically hunch over and move as if they\u2019re using a cane,\u201d Cook- Levy, said.<\/p>\n<p>Exposing students to older people changed the way they think about aging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving a diversity of conversations in class, the older adults bring so much depth,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m excited to create more opportunities for this kind of Intergenerational rapport at Theatreworks as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22255\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22255\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22255\" src=\"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The members of the theater company pose for a group picture.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/intergenerational-theater-class.jpg 926w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The members of the theater company pose for a group picture.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The students adapted &#8220;The Giving Tree&#8221; by Shel Silverstein into a play. The story is about a boy who grows up sharing a relationship with an apple tree in his backyard. In the theatrical version, women in the class played the tree while men played the role of the boy as he aged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the students don\u2019t grow up with grandparents and don\u2019t have long-standing relationships with older people in their lives,&#8221; Cook-Levy said. &#8220;Now they\u2019ve developed creative relationships.
