{"id":21609,"date":"2015-12-17T18:32:30","date_gmt":"2015-12-18T01:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=21609"},"modified":"2018-01-12T08:41:10","modified_gmt":"2018-01-12T15:41:10","slug":"photo-feature-yusef-komunyakaa-poetry-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communique.uccs.edu\/?p=21609","title":{"rendered":"Photo feature: Yusef Komunyakaa poetry reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A UCCS alumnus recognized as one of the nation\u2019s great poets hosted\u00a0a public reading and book signing on Dec. 17 at the University Center.<\/p>\n<p>Yusef Komunyakaa, 68, of New York City, graduated from UCCS in 1975, following his service in the U.S. Army where he was a correspondent and managing editor of the Southern Cross, the biweekly newspaper of the 23rd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service.<\/p>\n<p>Now a Global Distinguished Professor of English at New York University, Komunyakaa\u00a0began writing poetry in 1973.
